Tips for Theory Test Confidence

Tip #1

If You Think You Can – You Probably Will

This is all about having a positive mindset. Look in the mirror, smile, tell yourself that you are going to pass. Tell yourself you’re capable of passing. Say the words out loud. Speak to yourself in the same way that you would speak to a good friend of yours who had their test coming up.

Tip #2

Imagine Passing

Close your eyes and imagine you’re at the theory test centre. You sit at the computer and start to read the questions. You remember to read the questions and answers at least twice. You know most of the answers and you only ‘flag’ questions you’re not totally sure of. You go back to these questions later and feel confident about your answers. You find the ‘case study’ questions easy. Then you start the hazard perception clips and you remain focused throughout. You notice the hazards and you click the mouse when you see the hazard and again when it develops.

You complete the test and go back to the waiting room. You get your belongings and go to the reception desk. You are handed a piece of paper and you read ‘Congratulations! You’ve PASSED the car driving theory test.’

Go through this process of imagining taking the test and passing it a few times leading up to test day.

Tip #3

Put it into Perspective

You want to pass! It’s important to you! You’ve worked hard for it, and you’ve spent a lot of money. Failing a theory test is inconvenient, it might be embarrassing, it might be frustrating. But it’s not the end of the world. You can take the test again.

Focus on putting your theory test result into perspective and this will reduce any nerves and anxiety you feel about failing your test.

Tip #4

Arrive Early

You need to be at the theory test centre at least 10 minutes before your test time but consider any possible hold ups and start your journey to the test centre in plenty time. It’s better to arrive very early and wait to go inside the test centre, than to arrive late and be rushing to get there.

Tip #5

You can help yourself to get rid of test anxiety, simply by breathing.
You should practice this breathing technique every day, a few days before your test.
Sit somewhere quiet and calming, make sure you’re not too hot and not too cold.

Close your eyes and:

  • Breathe in through your nose – for the count of four
  • Hold your breath – for the count of four
  • Blow out through your mouth – for the count of four
  • Hold your breath – for the count of four

Repeat these 5 to 10 times and you will naturally feel less anxious, more calm and more able to focus.

Good luck with your theory test!
